The Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement that the safety of bicycle saddle components, including bike shoes, saddles and chains, “is a critical issue in the bicycle industry.”
The agency also said that the best way to protect cyclists is to “take action now, by making bicycle safety a priority in all your projects, in all of your work, and in your home.”
The statement added that it is critical that “the bicycle industry, the U.S. Government and all consumers take the necessary actions to reduce bicycle-related injuries and fatalities.”
The Consumer Protection Agency has previously called for the safety standards to be strengthened in a report issued last month, calling for bicycle saddle safety standards “to be revised and updated to better protect cyclists.”
The CPSC also said the bicycle helmet law needs to be amended to include “mandatory use” of helmetless helmets.
The law is currently being challenged in court.
