In the past two years, the Bicycle Blue Book Project has helped thousands of cyclists make sense of their own bicycle’s mechanical woes.
This year’s edition of the book, the first to be printed on Australian paper, is an attempt to make a better, faster, and safer bicycle for cyclists.
The book’s author, a man named Jason, started his journey on the road and ended up spending over a month in the saddle on a single-speed bike.
“I had never ridden a bike before,” he told Fairfax Media.
“The whole idea behind this book was to help people who are struggling with mechanical problems to understand how their bicycle works and how it can be repaired.”
To start the project, Jason enlisted the help of fellow bicycle enthusiasts from the Bicycle Bike Club of Australia, who helped him develop a list of common bike problems and then he and his team spent a year looking for bikes that would be the best fit for his needs.
“In the end, we found a handful of bikes that were pretty good, but they were all pretty expensive,” he said.
“We didn’t have a budget to spend on parts so we started looking at what parts could be produced at home.”
After months of research and a couple of failed attempts at building a bike to test out, Jason’s team discovered a set of parts that they could produce at home.
It was an opportunity for them to experiment with different parts that would fit the bike’s needs.
The first thing Jason needed was a fork.
The idea behind a fork is to reduce the amount of wheel travel a rider has to make the right amount of turn, which can be very beneficial in some situations.
A bike’s suspension system is designed to absorb the impact of a hard turn by preventing the rider from getting stuck in a corner and then releasing the brakes in time to slow down.
A single-gear fork allows a rider to go from a hard corner to a gentle corner in about a second.
But when riding a bike with a single gear, it’s important to make sure that the rider has enough time to make up the difference between the amount that the fork needs to travel and the amount the bike is going to give.
For Jason, that’s about 1 second.
“When you’re on a road bike, there’s a lot of travel in the fork, so it needs to be really tight and light and light enough to keep you from being thrown off,” he explained.
“But when you’re riding a double-gear bike, you have to do a lot more travel.”
Jason and his crew found that there were a few factors that would affect the amount a bike could deliver that 1 second of travel.
The biggest issue is the amount or how much wheel travel you need to deliver.
A lot of the time, a rider will need a set-up that is going too much or too little.
The best way to make this work is to try and find the perfect set-ups that give the rider a perfect amount of travel, but not too much.
If your set-Up is going through the motions of making the bike ride more smoothly and efficiently, that will reduce the need for a single travel fork.
If you’re already riding with a set up that has a set amount of bike travel and you don’t like it, you can always find a different set-ter.
“You can find a bike that is just right,” Jason said.
After finding a bike for his set- Up that would work with his bike, he took it out on a daily basis.
Jason and the rest of his team put the bike through their paces.
They did some riding and they looked at the bike on their phones, looking for problems they could fix, and then they tried to solve the problem.
“Every morning I’d go into my garage and put the bikes together,” he recalled.
“Then I’d just put the forks on and put a few wheels on.
Then I’d have my buddy and he’d take a look at it, and he would say, ‘I think we need to get the bike out there.'”
So Jason and Jason and everyone else at Bicycle Bike Clubs of Australia went out on the roads, and the bike they built was the first bike that he had ever ridden in person.
Jason says the bike was the result of a series of challenges that he and a lot in his group faced.
“It was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he shared.
“Getting it to ride was not something we could have done in a few weeks, so we were very focused on trying to get it to do what it needed to do.”
Jason says he didn’t want to go into the details of how the bike worked, because the team didn’t even know the basic details of what a fork was, so he would let them build the bike in the garage.
